El Siglo newspaper points out that the announcement by Minister of Public Works Miguel Vargas Maldonado that the construction of the athletes village will not be financed by a US$140 million loan from a Spanish bank could be enough for the country to lose the right to host the Games. Funding for the village would now come from local sources, it was announced. El Siglo says that the financing was part of commitments made by the country in a letter of intent signed with the Panamerican Sports Organization during the meeting held in Colorado Springs, US on 21 October. The organization gave the country 90 days to come through with the commitments.
