The government announced the construction of electricity transmission lines from Santo Domingo to the cities of Azua (going West), (going North) Santiago and San Pedro de Macorís (going East) at a cost of US$150 million. This project, known as the "Electric Highway", will include the installation of highway lighting to increase the visibility of the roadways and their immediate environment, helping drivers maneuver more efficiently and safely. The government recently announced they have accepted bids to choose the company to install new transmission lines leading to the Northwest and Santiago. Funding from the Fondo de Inversiones de Venezuela would be used. (23 November 2000)
