The Metropolitan Office of Transport (OMSA), the government office that coordinates the operation of public transport buses in Santo Domingo and Santiago, announced that yesterday 27 bus drivers were fired for reckless driving and other serious offenses. The announcement was made the day following the report from the Metropolitan Transport Authority (AMET) regarding the arrest of a bus driver after passengers called the department suspecting the driver was drunk. At the time of the arrest, the driver was carrying a bottle of rum. Diógenes Castillo, director of OMSA, said that the department would continue to penalize drivers that do not perform at department standards. He said that OMSA is evaluating all the drivers to ensure the safety of passengers.
