Jarabacoa puts up a fight against dam

The community of Jarabacoa is fighting for its future. The community sees the announced construction of the Manabao-Bejucal-Tavera Dam as a mortal blow to its well-being. Opponents say the project was discarded in 1986 because of its high cost and because of the impact it will have on the municipality and community of Jarabacoa. These same reasons prevail today. Reportedly, the dam will benefit the area of Jánico, but the 26 kilometer detour the Yaque del Norte river would be forced to make would permanently damage tourism development and farming in Jarabacoa, say the dam’s opponents. Jarabacoa is a mecca for adventure lovers, and has made a name for itself with its river rafting and mountaineering excursions. The Dominican Electricity Corporation signed a contract with INTECSA-INARSA on 11 September 2000 for the construction of the dam. The Listín Diario 28 November edition carries a report by Eleuterio Martínez on the subject, which can be read today at http://www.listin.com.do/vida/vida1.html
