New Haina Port and Duarte Highway connection

The government has begun the construction of a highway that would link the Port of Haina with the Duarte Highway that heads north. Construction works have started at Km. 28 of the Duarte and residents of Pedro Brand complained bulldozers destroyed their plantings and their water supply was disconnected. The Oficina de Ingenieros Supervisores de Obras del Estado said that it is the office in charge of the project. The residents in the area speculate that the highway is being built to provide a direct route for southern farmers to deliver their produce to the new mega market that has been announced by Spanish investors to be built at Km. 22 of the Duarte Highway.
