PLD government officials benefit from apartments

The Listín Diario published a report on the hefty subsidies the Fernández administration granted to beneficiaries of apartments in two upscale complexes built by the government. According to the article written by Ana Mitila Lora, the list of the beneficiaries includes many well-known PLD government officers or congresspersons that received subsidies of RD$1.2 million on the appraised value of the apartments. The focus of the article is on the Habitacional Mairení (Los Cacicazgos) and Torre Enriquillo residential complexes. On the list of beneficiaries are: former controller of the Republic Haivanjoe Ng Cortiñas; Emigdio Sosa, former director of the Social Plan of the government; Ruben Darío Peña Pichardo, former National Treasurer; former deputy Carlos Amarante Baret; Felix Bautista, former director of the Oficina Coordinadora de Obras de Estado, and Jose Francisco Peña Guaba, son of former PRD leader. Also mentioned as beneficiaries are several close relatives of former President Fernández. The practice of benefiting government allies or officers with units in government built complex is nothing new in the DR. In the past thousands of units have practically been donated by the government, which has been very poor at collecting mortgage payments.
