RD$100 million in goods "found" in abandoned warehouse

El Siglo newspaper editorializes today on the case of RD$100 million in goods, many damaged, that were found in a warehouse of the Ministry of Education. In the warehouse, located in Quita Sueños, Haina 50 damaged vehicles, thousands of toilets, desks, blackboards and textbooks were found. "For many years, those goods were stocked there, as if it were a tomb of a pharaoh," says the newspaper. The newspaper editorial writer points out, like Hoy newspaper did last week, that the discovery is another demonstration of the accounting deficiencies of the government. The editorialist agrees with its colleagues at Hoy newspaper that editorialized on the same lines last week, that auditors need to be hired to improve the government’s accounting procedures. "The cases of misappropriation of funds that have recently been sent to justice indicate that in our country there are no controls," says the newspaper. "At present checks can be issued to entities that are not legally incorporated. We believe that is where the problem is. If more taxes are paid the state will have the capacity to provide better services to the community. And, of course, this will also provide more resources for politicians to squander with impunity."
