President Hipólito Mejía signed Law 129-00 that adds the name of Dr. José Francisco Peña Gómez to that of the Las Americas International Airport. The airport’s official name will now be Aeropuerto International de las Américas Dr. José Francisco Peña Gómez. An event to the effect took place on Friday at the National Palace. What was to be an event in honor of the former PRD leader, turned out to be a much-commented political event. Only two of 24 PRD senators and none of the 97 PRD deputies that so enthusiastically voted for the bill attended the event. The two PRD senators in attendance were José Antonio Najri and Enrique Lopez. Last week, the president of the Senate Ramón Alburquerque (PRD-Monte Plata) clashed with the president of the PRD, Hatuey de Camps over the constitutional reform request passed by the Senate. The congressmen said they did not go because they were not invited.
