Medical Association objects to foreign doctors

The President of the Dominican Medical Association (AMD) has asked the Ministry of Public Health to identify and remove all foreign physicians who are practicing in the DR without fulfilling the legal requisites to exercise the medical profession. Victor Diaz Alba, who headed an AMD delegation that met with Public Health Minister, Jose Rodriguez Soldevilla, said that his organization will be responsible to purge unlicensed foreign doctors from public hospitals, but that the Ministry must put a stop to those who practice medicine privately. No figures are available on the numbers of such illegal practitioners, but Diaz Alba referred to "hundreds of foreign doctors" in private practice. It is common knowledge that many Cuban physicians have established practices in Santo Domingo and other major cities in recent years.
