20% power bill increase may not be passed on to users

Economist Andres Dauhajre said that a high ranking government power commission (which includes former Central Bank governor Hugo Guiliani and general manager of the CDE Cesar Sanchez) is studying ways to negotiate with power generators to avoid increases in the cost of power to consumers. He says the commission recognizes the already high rates Dominican consumers pay for power. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Industry and Commerce and power distributors have announced an increase of at least 20% in billing to consumers who pay RD$1,500 a month and more. Despite this announcement, Dauhajre says the government hopes to negotiate with the generators so this price increase is not passed on to consumers.
