Citizens must insist on productive projects

Andres Dauhajre, in charge of the new sovereign bonds unit, has urged Dominicans to demand that the government use the funds for productive projects. He said it is imperative that the funds go to projects that produce returns so the money can be repaid. He said there is a clause that obliges the government to this in the sovereign bond bill being sent to Congress. Dauhajre told Hoy newspaper that the bonds could be ready by mid July. The government plans to issue US$500 million. Dauhajre says the money would push lending rates down, improve the cash flow of the government, and help maintain high growth rates by creating new job opportunities. He said the government will then be able to let go its tight monetary policies. Dauhajre is the executive director of the Unidad del Programa de Mediano Plazo de Financiamiento Externo.
