Balaguer to have last word on sovereign bonds?

The president of the Chamber of Deputies, Rafaela Alburquerque, said that President Hipolito Mejia will meet with former President Joaquin Balaguer to lobby for the passage of the bonds bill. Alburquerque said that after that meeting, the PRSC party deputies will receive their instructions on how to vote on the sovereign bond bill. The government wants to issue US$500 million in sovereign bonds. President Balaguer has a track record of being against foreign borrowing. His governments were known to carry out most public works using internally generated funds or funding from the World Bank and the Inter American Development Bank. Deputy President Alburquerque said that Balaguer would have the last word on the matter. The government needs the approval of the PRSC deputies to pass the bill allowing the government to issue the bonds.
