El Siglo newspaper looks into the high cost of the Jacobo Majluta Avenue to Dominican taxpayers today. The government estimates it will cost RD$419.9 million to repair Jacobo Majluta Avenue on the north side of Santo Domingo. The avenue, was built during the 1994-1996 Balaguer administration at a cost of RD$300 million. Shortly after, major construction flaws were revealed. The Fernandez administration (1996-2000) invested RD$234.6 million more to repair it, bringing the total to RD$534.6 million. The repairs, though, were not completed and now the Mejia administration says another RD$419.9 million (allotted in the US$500 million sovereign bond package) are needed to finish the avenue. This brings the total cost of the 9.8 kilometer avenue to RD$954.5 million or more than RD$97 million per kilometer. In addition, another RD$100 million has been invested in the access road to the La Isabela Airport off Jacobo Majluta Avenue.
