The administrator of the Dominican Electricity Corporation announced measures that will reduce the cost of power in the DR. He said the goal is to lower the price of one kilowatt/hour to US$0.06 from its current rate of US$0.10-US$0.14. He explained that the CDE is investing more than RD$1 billion to improve the transmission of power. This should be completed in the first half of 2002, coinciding with many new units entering into service, such as the 450 megawatts plant in San Pedro de Macoris, 300 megawatts in Punta Caucedo and 50 in Barahona. He said work is taking place on the construction of new lines from Santiago-Moca-Salcedo, Nagua-Samana, Santo Domingo-San Pedro de Macoris. He said work on the La Romana-El Seibo-Higuey transmission line was recently concluded.
