President Mejia favors PRSC to head Chamber of Deputies

President Hipólito Mejia said he will leave it up to former President Joaquin Balaguer to decide the presidency of the Chamber of Deputies. Mejia favors Rafaela Alburquerque be re-elected. In practice, despite being in the opposition, Alburquerque has voted in favor of most PRD projects. The post is being sought by competing PRD factions. By leaving the chamber in the hands of Alburquerque, the President would have an ally for the passing of his bills and avoid an internal party conflict. Regarding the presidency of the Senate, which also needs to be decided by the 16 August vote, President Mejia said that he will not get involved, that the senators should choose their man. Andres Bautista Garcia and Ramon Alburquerque are the contenders for that post.
