President acts to benefit power distributors

President Hipolito Mejia has sent changes that would increase the profitability of the power distributors and generators to the Chamber of Deputies. The General Electricity bill has been in Congress for more than eight years. It would provide regulations to control the electricity industry. Intense lobbying has gone on as interested parties seek amendments to their advantage. The Senate this year passed the bill with extensive modifications, including a reduction in the distributors’ share of the market. This was reduced to 10% to promote competition. The distributors then lobbied President Mejia who sent a modification to the Chamber that would increase distributors’ participation to 15%. The President also favors extending the contracts of distributors to 30 years.
