Power plays at the PRSC

Former President Joaquin Balaguer will convene an extraordinary meeting of the Executive Central Committee of the PRSC party tomorrow. Political analyst Orlando Gil of El Siglo speculates that behind this meeting could be the intent to make changes in the party’s board, replacing acting president Donald Reid Cabral with Luis Toral. The party could also seek to replace Federico Antun Batlle as political secretary of the organization. Gil says the meeting was called at a time when analysts say the party is diluting itself in confusion. “The Reformistas don’t know if they exist as such, or are just the jokers in the cards of the PRD and PLD parties,” he writes. He also adds, “If a political cartoon were drawn today, it would depict the party as having one foot in the PRD and another in the PLD.” Recently, former PRSC Vice President Jacinto Peynado refused to accept a proposal to run for mayor of Santo Domingo, believing that his candidacy was being peddled to the political parties for gains in which he would not participate.
