The Central Bank has announced a second tender for the Playa Grande and Montellano tourism development projects. A first tender called in 1999 did not attract enough bidders for it to go ahead. The Playa Grande development is valued at US$100 million and is eight million square meters in size plus the Playa Grande Golf Course which has a reputation as one of the finest if not the finest golf course in the Caribbean. Montellano is four minutes from Puerto Plata International Airport and has 17 million square meters of which 10 million are labeled as having prime tourism development potential. Vice Governor of the Central Bank Luis Manuel Piantini is in charge of organizing the tender. Once it is called, interested parties will have 60 days to submit their proposals. (18 June 2001)
