Ministry of Environment closes garbage collection garage

The garage and maintenance workshop of Urbaser Dominicana, a private garbage collection company, were closed down yesterday by the Ministry of Environment. The Ministry had given the company 80 days to relocate from the La Isabelita neighborhood, in eastern Santo Domingo. The neighbors had protested the bad smells generated when the trucks were washed, the constant horn honking of the truck drivers and the drivers’ foul language. The shop operated in three shifts 24 hours a day. The neighbors had for over a year requested that the shop be relocated. Gustavo Teruel, spokesman for the company, said they had not relocated because the city government had yet to assign them an adequate location.
