Preparing adventure travel

Minister of Environment Frank Moya Pons announced that for the winter tourism season the Cueva de las Maravillas, a cave located between San Pedro de Macoris and La Romana, will be readied to receive visitors. The Minister says they expect 400,000 tourists will visit the cave in its first year. The cave has pictographs and curves and turns and even an interior toboggan that make it exciting for adventure travelers. He also said that the department is working on the access and improving conditions for tourists to visit the Hoyo del Palempito in the National Park of Bahoruco in the Southwest. Work is advanced on the opening of the Hispaniola Trail in the centrally-located mountain chain, Cordillera Central. Works are also underway to ready visitor centers at Rio Limpio in Restauración and Cerro El Morro in the National Park of Monte Cristi, both in the Northwest. (26 June 2001)
