August start for mega port

Samuel Conde, spokesman for the Zona Franca Multimodal Caucedo, announced the start of construction for the end of August. The mega port which will handle container cargo, automobiles and other wheeled vehicles, and probably cruise ship travel, will be carried out with an investment of more than US$250 million. The new port will have an extension of 820,000 square meters, and 1,100 meters of coastal frontage facing the Caribbean Sea. In addition to the dock, the port will feature 500,000 square meters for transshipment operations and a 300,000 square meter warehouse and distribution area. “The idea is not to compete with existing parks but to create a new generation of free zones, a new niche,” explained Conde. He said the park would create more than 100,000 jobs, including thousands for the impoverished residents of Andres, Boca Chica. The project is to be financed by the Scotia Bank, the International Finance Corporation and financial organizations in France, Holland, Denmark, Germany.
