President Mejia counting on Caricom support for UN seat

President Hipolito Mejia insisted that he has the written support of the English-speaking nations of the Caribbean for the Dominican Republic’s aspirations to a seat on the United Nations Security Council. The DR began to campaign for the seat in 1997. Mejia said only Bahamas has formally given its vote to Mexico. Nevertheless, news reports indicate that some heads of state may change their minds after meeting with Mexican President Vicente Fox at the Bahamas Caricom heads of state summit. More than anything else, the UN seat is but a matter of prestige for Dominican international relations. For more on the position, see http://www.un.org/Overview/Organs/sc.html
