President Hipolito Mejia announced the construction of the Sanate Hydroelectric Dam in La Altagracia province. The dam will supply potable water, irrigation and electrical power to the province. It will be built at an estimated cost of RD$2,832 million (approx. US$170 million). The dam will be built where Mana and Sanate rivers meet. The construction of the dam comes at a time when tourism is booming in the province that has over 23,000 hotel rooms, with construction or more units expected to continue. (9 July 2001)
