Scandal in Drug Council

Appointments made by President Mejia at the National Council of Drugs have led to an upheaval and revelations of scandalous procedures. Drugs prevention expert, Reynaldo Pazos Pinedo lasted only three days on the job as administrative director prior to being expelled by the president of the organization, Antonio Martinez Azar. Olga Celeste Ventura who would replace Pazos only lasted a month and Oneida Acevedo, in charge of treatment and rehabilitation placed complaints last week at the Attorney General’s office denouncing that Martinez had threatened them and their families. Reportedly, Martinez believes the two had leaked to Hoy newspaper the fact that real estate and vehicles confiscated to suspected drug dealers whose cases were in the judiciary had been transferred to government employees for their personal use. President Mejia said he had authorized this because it had become a common practice in previous administrations. This lead Jesus Feliz, director of the Department for the Prevention of Corruption of the state, to state that no one, even the President of the Republic, was above the law. He ordered an investigation. Feliz has a poor track record in his investigations.
