Flights between the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico had to be suspended yesterday due to clouds of ashes caused by eruptions of the Soufriere Hills volcano in Montserrat. Clouds of ash extended up to 6.1 kilometers high, or approximately 20,000 feet around the area of Puerto Rico and adjacent islands. The phenomenon caused American Airlines, American Eagle, Air Santo Domingo and Air Caraibe to cancel flights to Puerto Rico. (31 July 2001)
