Children’s library closed to build gift shop

The Colonial City Children’s Library that for 22 years has operated within the Fortaleza Ozama will suspend its activities as of today. The Ministry of Culture signed an agreement with the Ministry of Armed Forces for the installation within the fort’s area of a Museum of Arms, reports El Caribe newspaper. The library served the public schools located in the Colonial City area. At least 100 children from the Santa Clara, Santa Barabara, San Pio X, Mahatma Gandhi, Nuestra Señora del Carmen, Salome Ureña, Argentina, Paraguay and Padre Billini schools have been using the facilities every day. Nora Wittkop, who volunteers at the library, lamented that it would be closed to give way to a cafeteria or gift shop for the Museum. The authorities offered the library a windowless locale within the Casa de Bastidas which was rejected.
