The Dominican Republic Basketball Team is the big surprise at the III World Sub 22 Category Championship in Japan. The Dominican team defeated Israel 91-62 to advance to the semifinals yesterday. This is the first time in the history of Dominican basketball that a Dominican team has advanced this far in a world championship. Coach Jose Dominguez attributed the success to teamwork. In the event, the DR first lost to Spain (97-64), then defeated Qatar (101-79), lost to Australia (100-84), defeated Egypt (107-76), then Slovenia (84-81) and now Israel (91-62). The DR team now has to face the winner of the SpainCroatia match. If it wins, it would be the silver medallist of the event. If it loses, it will play for the bronze medal. Luis Flores, Jack Michael Martinez and Amaury Filion have been the most outstanding players.
