Kmart Corporation, the USs second-largest discount retailer, will open five stores in the DR starting next year. Kmart is a US$40 million company with more than 2,100 Kmart and Kmart Supercenter retail outlets. The opening of stores in the DR is part of an expansion plan in the Caribbean. Kmart already operates in Barbados, Trinidad, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands. Charles Conaway, president of the company, announced during a luncheon attended by President Hipolito Mejia that the company chose the DR because of its good investment climate. The company will open its first Kmart Supercenter in Santiago next year. The Supercenters offer more than 100,000 items. The company announced it would invest more than US$125 million to open five Dominican stores.
