Businessman Jorge Abbott criticized the lenience of the government for allowing foreign companies to violate the foreign investment law. He accuses the foreign companies of deducting the royalties they pay to themselves as an expense. He said the companies should pay taxes on these profits prior to taking the money out of the country. He criticized the Central Bank and government authorities for being lenient on this issue. If you own a business you cant pay a service to yourself and then declare it as expenses, he said. Abbott was commenting on a proposal made by the Dominican Association of Businesswomen to modify the foreign investment law.
