President Hipolito Mejia is one of 17 heads of state and two vice presidents representing 19 countries attending the Rio Group Summit in Chile. The meetings open today, Thursday, 16 August and will end on Saturday. President Mejia was scheduled to speak this morning at a breakfast with Chilean businessmen interested in investing in the DR. Chilean investment accounts for 3% of total foreign investment in the DR. Press reports say the Office for the Promotion of Investments hopes to find a Chilean wine partner for production in the southwestern Neyba area. Also on the Presidents agenda is the signing of economic, trade, tourism, education, banking, and housing bilateral agreements. The President will also visit the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean where experts will analyze the performance of the Dominican economy. The Rio Group was founded in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in December 1986 to consolidate the growth and development of the region, as well as to reaffirm the cultural, geographical and historical identity of the nations of Latin America and the Caribbean.
