Participacion Ciudadana, an outspoken civic group, issued a statement today on its opinion of the Mejia governments first year. Its conclusions are: An adequate management of macroeconomic policy, translated into stability, is the most important achievement of the present administration at its first year point. Among the positive aspects, we mention certain levels of openness of the government with the civic society and the passing of important bills that had stagnated in Congress such as Social Security, Ombudsman, Electricity, Health and Education. Contrastingly, there is a marked incapacity of the government to start its so called social package, as well as an accelerated indebtedness in the short term, steps backward regarding application of the civil service career law, continued handpicking of those who carry out government works and the killing of civilians by the National Police.
