DR could become distribution center for South America

President Hipolito Mejia announced in Montevideo, Uruguay, that Chilean and Uruguayan companies could open manufacturing/distribution centers in the DR to export goods to Central America and the Caribbean. The companies would be taking advantage of the free trade agreements the DR has with its neighbors. President Mejia also mentioned a Chilean company that builds solar-powered stoves. He said the DR government offered them a contract to install this type of stove in urban and rural areas where charcoal is used. He also said that Consorcio Financiero Chileno is considering a project worth US$52 million to manufacture low and high tension copper lines for export to the region. President Mejia is on a seven-day tour of South America (Chile, Uruguay and Argentina) which ends tomorrow.
