Nationwide drivers education program

The Ministry of Public Works has announced the start of a drivers education program in 1,296 public and private schools in the six principal cities. The program will start with the new school year. Marino Saldaña, director of education at the Transit Department (DGTT) said the plan is to reach out to 90% of the two million students in the next four years. This year, 495 schools in Santo Domingo, 123 in San Pedro de Macoris, 121 in La Romana, 155 in San Cristobal, 191 in San Francisco de Macoris and 211 in San Juan de la Maguana will take part. Students will receive instruction on driving laws, signals and signs, effects of alcohol and drug consumption on drivers, and the perils of talking on mobile phones while driving.
