US$52 million investment in airports

Alex Santana, president of Aerodom, the company that operates the Puerto Plata and Santo Domingo (Las Americas) airports, said they invested US$52 million in the terminals in their first year. Seventy percent of the money went into the Las Americas International Airport. There, new conveyor belts, customs and migration equipment, electrical and air-conditioning systems have been installed or will be in place by December 2001. By 2003, the airport will have the capacity to handle six million travellers a year. “We want user-friendly and safe airports for travellers,” said Santana. Aerodom has the contract to manage the Las Americas (Santo Domingo), Gregorio Luperon (Puerto Plata), Arroyo Barril (Samana) and Maria Montez (Barahona) airports. It is also building the Catey (Samana) and La Isabela (northern Santo Domingo) airports. (21 August 2001)
