The Listin Diario reports that the Mejia administration has told the contractor that won a tender to build major highways that it is no longer interested in their participation in the RD$6 billion projects. The contracts were signed in February between the Ministry of Public Works and the Concesionaria Dominicana de Autopistas y Carreteras, S.A. (Codacsa) The government sent a communication dated 10 July 2001 signed by Technical Secretary of the Presidency Rafael Calderon, to engineer Atilio de Frias Reyes, president of Codacsa, indicating that the contract does not respond to the government policy regarding the conditions of the concession nor the investment expectations required to grant the concession as stipulated in the signed contract. The construction project has financing from the World Bank organizations. The Listin Diario says that if the contract is cancelled, this would interrupt the World Bank financing, including donations, leaving the government to complete the projects with other funding.
