Frederic Emam-Zade, chief economist of the Fundacion Global Economia y Desarrollo (a think tank headed by former President Leonel Fernandez), says the economy will become the major issue of the 2002 and 2004 elections. He urges the government to reduce the tax burden so the economy can return to its previous growth levels and the majority of Dominicans can improve their living standards. He also says the sovereign bonds should be nicknamed the Electoral Bonds since the money will be used to fund the 2002 congressional and municipal election campaigns of PRD candidates.
