On the same issue, El Caribe newspaper comments on the coincidence of the corruption prevention office (Depreco) convening only two days before the selection of the new judges. Many see the Depreco move (to question Fernandez) as a smoke screen to distract the attention away from the selection of the Supreme Court judges so that the public does not focus on the politicising of the choice, says the newspaper in its editorial today. It points out that the issue on which Fernandez and his cabinet would have been questioned was already discussed and analysed six months ago. In February, the last former government officer testified on the matter and the audit on the fund in question was published in the press two months ago, closing the case. Why then this new request, why dust off this case if it is not to get the former president to offer explanations precisely two days before the meeting of the National Council of the Magistracy?, states the editorial. The editorial says that President Mejia has the opportunity to forego the circus and instead to present a more majestic show by televising the deliberations to choose the new judges, as occurred in 1997 when the Supreme Court was updated.
