Supreme Court president believes in Mejia

The President of the Supreme Court, Jorge Subero Isa, told the Listin Diario yesterday that if the National Council of the Magistracy (CNM) chooses politically-inclined judges to replace the three missing Supreme Court Justices it would affect not only the judiciary’s independence but also economic stability. He said he does not think this will happen as he trusts the word of President Hipolito Mejia to bar politics from the CNM decisions. The CNM will meet for the task on 13 September. The ruling party, PRD has a majority in the body. Subero wants the judges to be chosen from the Appeals Courts judges. He is opposed to replacing judges Margarita Tavares and Hugo Alvarez Valencia on the grounds that they are over 75 years old.
