Economist denies RD$17 billion increase in money in circulation

Economist Vicente Bengoa, former Superintendent of Banks in the PLD government, said it is not true that the money in circulation this year has increased RD$17 billion as President Mejia stated yesterday to back up his claims of an increase in economic activity. Bengoa said that the Central Bank report shows that money in circulation from July 2000 to July 2001 increased only 3 billion. He said money in circulation in July 2000 was RD$31 billion and it had increased to RD$34 billion a year later. “Evidently the President has incurred in an error because there are people who are not informing him adequately,” he stated. President Mejia said earlier that the Central Bank governor, Frank Guerrero, was “half mute” for not having boasted about the increase of money in circulation. Guerrero has not commented.
