President gives go ahead to TV and politics

President Hipolito Mejia said that the selection of three new Supreme Court judges will be televised as it was when the court was renewed in 1997. A first session is scheduled to be held at the National Palace on 13 September. The President said the National Council of the Magistracy would only meet to choose the three judges, nothing more. The President does not rule out choosing a judge who may be partisan. “There will be no tricks,” he said. “I am not interested in the candidates being politicians, but that does not mean that the post is off limits for someone with a political affiliation,” he explained. There are 163 candidates. A coalition of national legal and civic organizations is carrying out a campaign urging that politics not dominate the selection of the judges.
