Council member favors rotating Supreme Court presidency

Senator Jose Gonzalez Espinosa, a newly elected member of the National Council of the Magistracy, told El Siglo that he is against life terms for presidents of the Supreme Court. He feels the presidency should rotate. He said the members of the National Council of the Magistracy have yet to determine the agenda of the body, outside of the choice of the three judges. The President of the Chamber of Deputies announced that a closed door preliminary meeting of the Council will take place on Wednesday, 12 September, one day before the official meeting date. Rafaela Alburquerque said constitutional reform will also be discussed with the President during the meeting. News reports indicate there is a major movement in Congress to reform the Constitution in order to extend the terms of Congressmen to benefit those who have a very low chance of being re-elected in the 16 May 2002 election.
