PRSC revs up for increased presence in Senate

Former President Joaquin Balaguer has warned that the PRSC would call the nation to oppose any plans to extend the period of legislators in Congress with a Constitutional Reform. Orlando Gil, political analyst at El Siglo, explains that former President Balaguer is moving to convince his senators to vote against any attempt by PRD senators to extend their terms for two more years. Gil speculates that the PRD is concentrating on the extension since they haven’t been campaigning for the 2002 election. Gil says that Balaguer is aware that the timing is right for his party to gain 10 seats in the Senate without much effort, breaking the dominance of the PRD in the Senate. Johnny Jones, spokesman for the PRSC, said the party aspires to win 10-15 senate seats and 50 to 60 deputies in the May 2002 congressional election. The PRSC support of the PRD in the 1998 election lead the PRD to a majority in Congress.
