Cooperative power purchases outlawed

The Superintence of Electricity announced in a paid advertisement today that Electricity Law 125-01 passed on 2 August does not allow commercial centers or apartment buildings to be considered “users” of power. The Superintendence says the Law only recognizes as “users” single units with a demand for less than 2 megawatts. The Superintendence says that the ceiling will be reduced to 1.4 megawatts in 2003, to 0.8 megawatts in 2004 and to 0.2 megawatts in 2005. A spokesman from AES, Manuel San Pablo, says today in Hoy newspaper that free zone parks cannot buy directly from power generators either. Hoy article by Manuel Guridi criticizes that the government has created a monopoly of Union Fenosa/Ege Haina and AES/Ege Itabo that will ensure the sustainability and supply of power at the expense of consumers.
