The National Police have placed a two-man guard at the Islam Circle, a meeting point for followers of Islam in Santo Domingo, as reported in El Caribe. El Siglo, in turn, points out that Middle Eastern and Central Asian citizens, many who study medicine in Dominican universities, complain of harassment by the Police. They stress that there are more than one billion Muslims in the world, most of whom do not identify with the use of violence. They said that on the contrary, the authorities should offer them protection because many Dominicans are connecting the Muslim religion with terrorism. El Siglo estimated that about 2,000 people from Pakistan, Afghanistan, Palestine and Lebanon study in the DR at the Unibe, Uce, Utesa, and Pucmaima Universities.
