President Hipolito Mejia argues that a ban on the re-election of any past President will open doors for new politicians. He said it is time to open doors to new leadership without the selfishness or arrogance of those who know it all. Costa Rica has a similar system. The bill would impede the ruling party’s leading opponent, former President Leonel Fernandez, from running again. President Mejia has said he will include the proposal in a Constitutional Reform Bill he will send to Congress next week. The press continues to debate the announced proposal of congressmen to include a provision that would legally allow them to extend their terms two more years so that presidential and congressional elections are held in the same year.
