Yesterday’s political show

Former President Leonel Fernandez spoke in a press conference yesterday after being interrogated for four hours on his government’s handling of RD$1.4 billion for construction and reconstruction works. The account was handled during the last eight months of his administration. Fernandez said he was not summoned because of concerns of theft but to request technical explanations on the procedures used to manage the money. Also present at the press conference were Attorney General Virgilio Bello Rosa, District Attorney Maximo Caraballo Aristy, and Jesus Feliz Jimenez of the Department for the Prevention of Corruption (Depreco). Attorney General Bello Rosa said the meeting accomplished what they wanted with Fernandez, which was an explanation on how the funds were managed. He said they limited their questioning to that matter because “the President did not carry out the works.” The legal authorities will continue their interrogations of 15 Fernandez government officers.
