Las Americas Expressway update

Engineer Hernani Salazar, of a Presidency-based public works office, has given an update on the expansion of the Las Americas highway into an expressway. The Las Americas Expressway will have six lanes, three in each direction. Salazar explains that traffic headed to the residential and commercial areas to the north of the avenue will in the future use the 14.7 kilometer fringe avenue now under construction from the Juan Carlos Bridge to the toll booth.
He explained that those users will have to detour from Las Americas highway to that fringe avenue from the start and finish because those taking the new expressway will not be able to turn north for another 10 or 15 kilometers. Salazar says that new lighting and landscaping will be installed along the expressway including the planting of trees.
He said the government is investing RD$341.5 million in the expansion of Las Americas highway and the northern fringe avenue. (1 October 2001)
