Temporary hold on Mirador del Sur park renovations

The Ministry of Public Works has announced the suspension of construction at the Mirador del Sur Park until a consensus is reached with users of the park and the Environment Ministry. Hoy newspaper says the Ministry by law has to approve the project before it can go ahead. The Ministry of Public Works did not get the green light for the renovations before proceeding. Minister of Public Works Miguel Vargas Maldonado said this week representatives of his department will meet with Environment and park users to reach a consensus on the project. Reportedly, the government will invest RD$29 million in the park project which will take six months. The plan is to expand the sidewalks to four meters wide from two meters and install new light posts. The destruction of grassy areas of the park to be replaced with paving has met with strong opposition.
