Symphony concerts

The 2001-2002 season of the National Symphony Orchestra will open Wednesday, October 3, at 8:30 p.m., in the Eduardo Brito Hall of the National Theater. The season will include eight concert performances, three in the fall, and the remainder between February and March of 2002. The opening concert will feature two works by Russian composer Sergei Prokofiev: the enormously popular Suite No. 2 from the ballet "Romeo and Juliet"; and the cantata "Alexander Nevsky" for mezzosoprano, chorus and orchestra. The Symphony’s new Music Director, Maestro Alvaro Manzano, will be conducting. The mezzosoprano part of the cantata will be sung by the young and talented Dominican singer Dorka Quezada. The National Choir, currently under the direction of Prof. Mayra Peguero, completes the roster of artists for the concert. Tickets for tomorrow’s performance can be bought at the National Theater’s box office. Prices vary from RD$50 to $250, according to location. Subscriptions for the whole season can be bought through the Sinfonía Foundation, with a considerable discount in the total price. For reservations, call 532-6600 or 535-8587 or e-mail to: f.sinfonia@codetel.net.do.
