El Siglo reports the Cibao International Airport will start operations on 30 November with a flight from the United States. The name of the airline was not announced by airport spokesman Carlos Sully Fondeur. But Sully did say that American Airlines is already setting up its offices at the RD$500 million privately-built airport.
The Cibao airport will cater to the cargo and passenger needs of the 14 Cibao provinces. Sully explains that the Puerto Plata International Airport, located about an hour away, will continue to serve tourists headed to North Coast beach resorts. (4 October 2001)
